A V engine is an engine that is a common configuration for an engine that has internal combustion. The V engine’s pistons and cylinders are aligned, in two separate banks or planes. This makes them appear to be in a “V” when they are viewed along the axis of the crankshaft. The V is usually at different angles in different engines but the angles that are common are 45, 60 and 90 degrees. The cylinders of the engine are arranged in two banks that are at an angle to one another.
In the V engine, every pair of corresponding pistons from each bank of cylinders usually share one crank pin on the crankshaft. This can either be by slave or master rods or by two ordinary connecting rods which are side by side.

The V-type of engine is a tried and tested engine design that has a large performance potential. The engine is good in Motorsport because it is as low to the floor as possible. This in turn increases the handling characteristics of the car because of the lower center of gravity.

In the Inline engine the cylinders are usually arranged in a line in a single bank. This inline engine is also called I because the pistons are vertical and all the cylinders are inline with each other. An inline engine is able to easily accommodate an odd number of cylinders like five cylinder engines or three cylinder engines which may be used in the small fuel efficient models in the near future. These engines have been used in locomotives, automobiles and aircraft. Some of the inline engines have also been produced for aircraft.

These are naturally balanced and keeps drive-shaft in line. This means that the inline engines will have less vibrations and therefore a lesser load on bearing. Bearings wear out faster when there is a smallest margin of error in balancing.

These engines are a preferred choice in cases where there is a need for high torque. This is because of long stroke and more rotational mass.
The Inline engines are easier to maintain and are cheaper. This is due to the easy access under the hood.

The engines are heavier and therefore need stiff blocks and lots of support.

The V engine configuration usually reduces the overall length, weight and height of the engine unlike the inline engine configuration.
The V-engine is more compact than the inline engines and contains cylinders that have the same number and dimensions. This effect usually increases depending on the number of cylinders in the engine. An inline engine is usually long and narrow and this when fixed in small cars can allow a very short hood.
This will make cooling hard in an air-cooled inline engine. Because V engines are compact, they can be made bigger and therefore more powerful than inline engines.
The V engine has a resulting vibration which happens because of the odd number of cylinders on each side. This is because the vibrations caused by each cylinder are not balanced and start rocking the engine and the vehicle. This is unlike in the inline engines.
The number of cylinders that are contained in the inline engine and the V engine is an important factor in the performance of the engine. Each of the cylinders contains a piston which pumps inside of it and these pistons connect and turn the crankshaft.
The more pistons are pumping, the more combustive events take place. This means that more power can be generated in a short span of time. The V engines have six cylinders as compared to the inline engines which have four. Therefore the V engines can generate more power within a short time.
In the inline engine, the order of firing is not in a straight format because this will deliver a lot of power to the driveshaft and then cause damage. In order to limit this, the engine is then made to fire in a 1-3-4-2 order. Unlike the V engine.
Finally V engines have been the engine of choice for the American automaker because they are quiet and powerful while still light and compact enough to fit most car designs. The inline engine cars were thought of as weak, slow, short on acceleration and unbalanced.
The choice of which engine to use will depend on an individual’s preference. For an individual who loves cars that have power and performance, the V engine is the best. However the V engine is more expensive in terms of fuel and damage to the environment. The Inline engine is for individuals who want fuel efficiency and lower emissions, lower production costs and lower maintenance costs.
The difference between V Engine and Inline Engine has its own advantage and disadvantage.
